Hedge laying is a traditional method of hedgerow maintenance to encourage re-growth and improve both its benefit to wildlife and its effectiveness as a boundary. Aged hedgerows may consist of thicker, well established plants that, although produce healthy new shoot material at the tips, this can be way above ground level where its effectiveness as a barrier or wildlife habitat matters more. Voids in the hedge can occur at ground level where there is little fresh growth, effecting the continuity of the hedge.
Hedge laying is a means of cutting the thicker stems partially, leaving some bark and sapwood attached, and then laying the stems down in line with the hedge and woven firmly, encouraging new growth further down in the hedge. It is a very skilled practice and methods and styles can vary throughout the country.
