Moorland Restoration

Moorland Restoration

Legacy Habitat Management specialise in moorland restoration projects nationwide. We have the experience and expertise to access and work in remote, sensitive environments on the UK’s moorlands and uplands.

Legacy Habitat Management understand the sensitive nature of moorlands and uplands and the approach to works required in these areas to maximise potential for regeneration.

We can provide solutions to facilitate the regrowth of vegetation species, where these have depleted or implement preventative measures such as erosion control to reduce the effects of public footfall or grip & gully blocking to reverse moorland degradation by water run-off.

We will endeavour to use local materials where possible that complement the surrounding environment. We may also use modern synthetic materials, or purpose designed products where these are deemed necessary, or can provide a greater overall benefit to the regeneration of a moorland landscape.

We have experience of working in SSSI’s (Sites of Special Scientific Interest), AONB’s (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and can provide low ground pressure machinery to minimise impact of any works on sensitive ground coverings or soil structures, flora and fauna. We can also arrange for provision of helicopter use for materials transportation, seed delivery or where access issues demand it.

Moorland Restoration Background

Much the UK’s moorland has been left in poor condition in recent years. Pollution, wildfires, over-grazing and recreation have all taken their toll. Where vegetation cover has degraded, peat and other sensitive soils can become exposed. Exposed peat can be subject to increased erosion without having the vegetation to act as a stabilising structure.

Some research has also suggested that peat can be a valuable carbon store, this can be released in to the atmosphere, potentially contributing to climate change when exposed.

Managed moorland restoration programmes can help to reduce negative human, agricultural, industrial and climatic impact on these sensitive habitats, improving biodiversity, reducing erosion and helping to protect sensitive soil structures and flora & fauna habitats.
