Badger Sett Construction

Artificial badger setts should be built to contain all the elements that would be included in a natural sett built by the badgers themselves. The basic elements should form a network of underground tunnels, nesting chambers, spoil heaps and entrance holes.

Plastic twin wall pipe is used to form the tunnel elements of the sett, some buried pipe ends being left 'open ended' to promote further digging by the resident badgers. The sett should also be positioned so that one of the entrance holes is at the lowest point of the sett to provide drainage. Another entrance hole should also be installed in a raised position to promote air circulation throughout the sett.

Nesting chambers should provide a safe and warm environment for the badgers and should therefore be positioned such that they are not in direct view of any entrance holes. The floor of each chamber should be left as bare earth and should have more than one tunnel exit into the rest of the sett.

Natural looking spoil heaps at sett entrances help give the appearance that the artificial badger sett has been excavated naturally by badgers and may help encourage the population of the badger sett.

Artificial setts are normally situated on natural badger foraging paths to ensure that they are found by badgers. If this is not possible, it may be necessary to bait the sett to encourage badger inhabitants.

Badger Fencing

A badger fence consists of a wire mesh designed specifically to prevent penetration by badgers. This badger proof wire mesh is usually fixed to a post and rail fence but in smaller applications the badger fencing wire mesh can be tensioned and attached to strainer posts, with additional support provided by intermediate posts.

The badger fencing wire mesh should also be installed with a buried horizontal return to prevent badgers from burrowing under the badger fencing.

Badger gates can be installed in the badger proof fence where the fence crosses badger foraging paths, these can be set to allow two way access through the badger fencing or set so that access is only possible in one direction where badgers are to be excluded from a certain area. Badger gates can also be installed in other types of fencing, such as a rabbit fencing, stock fencing etc where these cross badger tracks.

There are different badger fencing wire mesh sizes available which come with different wire spacing profiles. Please click here to view a diagram of these profiles, all are available from www.wildlifefencing.co.uk.
